Pedro A. Piedra, MD, is a professor in the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology and the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and director of the Viral Diagnostic Research Laboratory in Houston, Texas. Dr Piedra is also a physician at Texas Children's Hospital and Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston.
Dr Piedra maintains membership with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society for Microbiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Society for Pediatric Research. He is a member of the under-represented minority graduate committee of Baylor College of Medicine. Dr Piedra has acted as principal investigator for numerous clinical trials studying viral infection, immunology, vaccine safety, and herd protection.
Dr Piedra is the author of more than 95 articles, books, and invited articles. He is an invited lecturer to medical and scientific meetings, conferences, and seminars in the United States and elsewhere. He has served as reviewer for Cochrane Review's Immunoglobulin treatment for respiratory syncytial virus infection and many journals, including Clinical Infectious Diseases, Journal of Immunology, Journal of Infectious Diseases, Journal of Virology, Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, Pediatrics, and Vaccine.
Dr Piedra received his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa and completed his pediatric residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Subsequently, he fulfilled a 3-year fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Children's Hospital of Buffalo of the State University of New York at Buffalo.
