These educational activities are archived recordings of live webcasts that originally took place on October 1, 2008, and October 2, 2008.

Audience

This educational activity is designed for pediatricians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care and management of pediatric respiratory patients.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be able to

  • - Identify the clinical presentation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in premature infants and high-risk infants who present with the signs and symptoms, as described by the 2006 Clinical Practice Guidelines issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
  • - Identify the risk factors for severe RSV infection
  • - Describe the approaches for prevention of RSV infection and discuss the appropriate indications for prophylaxis
  • - Describe the strategies for influenza prevention and identify the current vaccination recommendations for the 2008-09 season, as described by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)
  • - Identify risk factors for influenza complications in children
  • - Provide a rationale for current therapeutic strategies with live and killed vaccines and discuss the appropriate use of antiviral drugs
